in CRIS Radio’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Local celebrities will go toe-to-toe with other Connecticut celebrities to help raise money for CRIS Radio on Saturday, April 28 at the Bond Ballroom in Hartford. CRIS Radio (Connecticut Radio Information System) is Connecticut’s only radio-reading service for people who are blind or unable to read due to other print disabilities, such as learning, physical, intellectual, emotional or medical conditions. Approximately 300 CRIS volunteers record articles featured in newspapers, magazines, and classroom materials for individuals with print disabilities. The recordings are made available through radio broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week, internet streaming, the CRIS Radio mobile app, and on-demand from any computer or mobile device. Competing this year as part of CRIS Radio’s 40th anniversary celebration are former dance champions of CRIS Radio’s signature fundraiser, Dining & Dancing in the Dark, featuring the nonprofits’ own version of the TV show “Dancing with the Stars.” This year’s All-Stars’ competition will include: Marilyn Alverio, founder and producer of Latinas & Power; Floyd Greene III, vice president of Aetna; Billy Johnstone, Broadway performer who appeared in Cats; Hanna Mordoh, NBC CT Channel 30 traffic reporter; and Nicole Nalepa, WFSB Channel 3 news and traffic reporter. Scot Haney, WFSB meteorologist and co-host of Better Connecticut, will emcee the event. In addition to CRIS Radio’s 24/7 broadcasts, it also streams articles featured in children’s magazines to each patient room at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. It also streams Spanish- and English-language newspapers and magazines to each patient room at Saint Francis Hospital. CRIS also records audible exhibits for museums and classroom materials for students with print challenges. CRIS Radio’s Dining & Dancing in the Dark gala begins at 5:30. Dinner will be followed by CRIS Radio’s own version of “Dancing with the Stars” and special ballroom dance performances by two CRIS volunteers, Diane Duhaime and Steve Famiglietti, who also are CRIS listeners. Open dancing follows the dance contest to the music of Eight to the Bar. Tickets cost $125 per person and can be purchased online at CRIS Radio’s website, www.crisradio.org, or by calling 860-527-8000. |
