WCC & FTDT Annual DinnerThe Windsor Chamber of Commerce and First Town Downtown are pleased to announce this year’s recipient of the Citizens of the Year Award: Dennis Guay and Kevin Searles, and the Jerry Hallas Memorial Award: Kristen Barbarotta.The Hallas award is presented each year to an individual who has contributed to the betterment of the Windsor Community, the quality of life in Windsor and typifies the ideals set forth by the late Jerry Hallas, founder of the Windsor News Weekly. This year's winner is Kristen Barbaotta. Kristen Barbarotta grew up in Trumbull and graduated Wesleyan University in 2000 with a BA in History and then from the University of Connecticut School of Law in May 2003 with her Juris Doctor. Kristen served on the board of directors of the Windsor Chamber of Commerce from 2004 to 2008, then moved up to VP of Community Relations for two years, then VP of Chamber Relations for two years, then was elected President for 2012-2014. She remains active with the Chamber today, continuing to chair the Business Development / Programs Committee and the Annual Dinner Committee as well as First Town Downtown's Promotions Committee. Kristen is a partner at Law Firm Johnson, Dowe, Brown, and Barbarotta LLC in Windsor. Kristen's husband Jayson is a teacher at Newington High School. They live in Windsor Locks with their daughter Reese. The Citizen of the Year award is presented to one or more citizens who have provided outstanding service to our community. We express our appreciation for the dedication and contributions that have been put forth by these individuals. This year's winners are Kevin Searles and Dennis Guay. Kevin Searlesearned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern CT State University with a major in Psychology and received a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of New Haven. In 1975 he started his career in law enforcement as a police officer in Plainville Connecticut coming to Windsor in 1982. After 5 years he was promoted to the position of Police Chief. He has resided in Windsor since 1985 with his wife Nancy. They have six children and ten grandchildren. Kevin enjoys a variety of leisure activities and volunteer work – especially working with children both through community agencies and church. Dennis Guay has a long history of military service starting in the Navy reserve program, then to the Marine Corp, then to the Connecticut Air National Guard serving all over the world receiving numerous medals and commendations. Dennis has long served his local community as a volunteer firefighter and EMT. Dennis left the fire department to volunteer with the Windsor Volunteer Ambulance where he continues today as the chief operating officer (CEO). While volunteering with the ambulance, he still finds time to be a member of the Windsor/Windsor Locks Rotary and is the incoming president for 2015-2016. The presentation of these and other awards will be given at the Windsor Chamber of Commerce-First Town Downtown Dinner and Installation Banquet to be held at the Hartford Windsor Marriott on Friday, June 5th. Awards are also going to Jenny Castle as Director of the Year, Junae Manderson as Student Entrepreneur of the Year, Carmon Funeral Home's "The Lodge" as the Parker Beautification Award and LCN Kitchen and Bath and Kindred Transitional Care & Rehabilitation Center will be awarded Business of the Year. First Town Downtown will be honoring Windsor Police Cadets with the Eagle Award. The public is invited to attend. The cost is $60. Meal selections are listed on the website.
