The student-created memorial lies next to Windsor's bronze eagle War Memorial statue, across from the Windsor Public Library and only steps away from Town Hall, the site of Windsor's annual Veterans Day ceremony. (see ceremony info below). This dramatic memorial to fallen heroes will remain standing until mid-November when the students will return to carefully remove the flags one by one. The powerful, visual representation was spearheaded by Windsor High Social Studies teachers Nancy Crilly-Kirk, Abbey Lowe, Christopher Todd and Amy Tria. This is just one of the many ways that Windsor students will salute America's veterans in November. As in past years, Windsor Public Schools will be open on Veterans Day, featuring many programs and activities to teach students about why Americans honor veterans. Events will include ceremonies, class activities, and in-class conversations with U.S. veterans themselves. The Town of Windsor Veteran's Day Observance will be held Thursday, November 11 at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Windsor Town Hall located at 275 Broad Street. This year's speaker is Windsor resident Raymond L. Thomas, Jr. Thomas served in Vietnam in 1965 aboard the aircraft carrier MIDWAY CVA-41. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1982 after 22 years. In 2002, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service following 18 years of service. In addition to the main speaker, the Windsor High School Band will perform along with the traditional salute to the dead.
