In response to a growing concern about nutrition, exercise and the increase in Type II Diabetes in youth, the J. F. Kennnedy School on Park Avenue in Windsor has participated in the American Diabetes Association "School Walk for Diabetes". The goals for this event are to provide education regarding Diabetes, to teach the importance of physical activity and good nutrition, and promote community awareness as well as raise funds to benefit research and find a cure for Diabetes. In the last two school years, Kennedy school has raised over $11,000, coming in 3rd and 4th place statewide for this event. Again this May, Kennedy School will participate in the "School Walk" for Diabetes in conjunction with the physical education department's A.C.E.S. (All Children Exercize Simultaneously) program. Kennedy school has been the recipient of P. E. equipment for the gymnasium as well as the classrooms as a result of there fund raising efforts. This year Kennedy School is seeking additional funds from corporate and community sponsors in order to surpass their previous efforts. Kennedy school currently has two fifth grade students with Type I Diabetes who have actively worked on these events. As they leave Kennedy to attend Sage Park Middle School next year, we would like to show our support for them by making this our greatest event ever. |
