WINDSOR, CONN., March 18, 2009 " Students at Windsor s Sage Park Middle School won fourth place in Connecticut s 2009 MATHCOUNTS competition and is the top-rated school for the entire Hartford chapter. Eighth graders Jeremy Fredette, Ellie Lauri and Sam Crisanti, and seventh grader Amber Johnson were presented with a trophy at the competition that was held on March 14 at the University of Hartford. They are only four of more than 20 Windsor middle school students who belong to Sage Park s afterschool Mathletes program. This fourth place honor is the highest MATHCOUNTS award that Windsor has achieved during the years that Sage Park has participated in the national program, explains Paul Cavaliere, Principal at Sage Park Middle School. A month ago, the entire team entered the Hartford Chapter competition in the team, individual and alternate categories, and was one of only six schools in the region to qualify for statewide contest. This is a reflection of a great deal of hard work by them and their Coach Jaf Chiang, a Mathematics teacher at both Sage Park Middle School and Windsor High. It is wonderful to see their efforts recognized in such a public way. A total of 26 school teams and 174 MATHCOUNTS from all over Connecticut participated in the 2009 State MATHCOUNTS Competition. The only schools to finish ahead of Windsor were Hopkins School in New Haven, East Lyme Middle School, and Mansfield Middle School. The MATHCOUNTS Foundation is a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1984 to promote math excellence among U.S. middle school students. Each year, more than 250,000 middle school students utilize MATHCOUNTS materials at the school level. Studies have shown that increased exposure to mathematics can not only change attitudes toward the subject, but can also increase mathematics achievement across a wide range of students. Connecticut s programs are sponsored by the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers.
