Windsor Challenger Baseball Sign-up Scheduled On Saturday, April 10, the Windsor Civitan Club will be registering individuals who would like to participate in Challenger Baseball. Registration will take place from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Windsor High School Tennis Courts on Sage Park Road in Windsor. There is no cost to participate in Challenger Baseball. Challenger baseball is designed specifically for kids with special needs and is open to individuals from Windsor and surrounding towns. Home games are played at Welch Park on Tuesday nights in May and June. Away games are played on Thursdays and Fridays at participating towns including Chicopee, Enfield, Simsbury and South Windsor. A "Challenger Day" is scheduled in June at the little league fields in Bristol when each player receives various prizes including tee shirts and bags. Games consist of 2 or 3 innings in which everyone bats and plays the outfield. Each players receives a hat and uniform. Players are also treated to refreshments after each game and the Windsor team ends its season with a picnic at which team photos and trophies are awarded. The Windsor Civitan Club started its Challenger Baseball team approximately 20 years ago. At that time there were approximately 15 players with various handicaps including players in wheel chairs. Since that time there have been players with many different disabilities. Play is not limited to students, as many who have participated have completed high school. Additionally, Buddies are always needed to help the players while in the field and running bases. Challenger is for boys and girls who would like to play baseball but for various reasons cannot do so. Challenger is sponsored by Little League International. If you have any questions, or would like to volunteer to be a Buddy, please call Francis Murphy (860-688-0956) or Robert Hartman (860-688-6139), |
