New Farmers Market Opens July 9th in Windsor

Greater Hartford residents who enjoy fresh locally grown vegetables and fruit, and homemade foods and crafts can find them at a new farmers market in Windsor, Conn. First Town Downtown of Windsor will host the region's newest farmers market starting Thursday, July 9. The outdoor market will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Thursday afternoon at 240 Broad Street (Route 159), on the corner of Maple Ave and Broad St. in Windsor Center. It will be held rain or shine, weekly, from July 9 through October 29.

"Our organization is introducing a new farmers market because there is greater interest than ever in healthy eating at prices that are affordable," explains Ashley Williams Dufresne, Director of First Town Downtown. "Windsor Center is a convenient location for the many people who use its businesses, restaurants and shops, and for others who drive through the area after work. In addition, during the summer, people can go downtown in Windsor Center and enjoy the free outdoor concerts at 7:00 p.m., across the street on the Town Green."

Many farms and vendors will sell products every single week. They include: produce from Newgate Farms of Windsor, Staples Farms of Mansfield, and 18th Century Purity Farm of Moosup; eggs and baked goods from Millix Family Farm of Willington; honey and beeswax candles from Swift Farm of Mansfield; garlic from The Garlic Farm of West Granby; and Teri Cummings, Certified Holistic Health Coach will be offering free recipes, healthy cooking tips & other ideas to easily incorporate all the wonderful, fresh, local foods that we have right here in Windsor. Teri will also be offering Gluten Free, Dairy Free and Sugar Free baked goods (based on availability) and tips to help those with food allergies thrive in life.

Each week, a different Windsor farm will be showcased. They include Brown's Harvest, Farms of Southern New England, and Kotowitcz Farm. Throughout the four months of the weekly Windsor Farmers Market, vendors and crafters will "rotate" through, offering specialty items. Two of those are B'udder Bar LLC and its goat milk skin products, and Barb's Bags ETC's handmade cloth shopping bags, produce bags and totes.

First Town Downtown officials are planning special entertainment for the pleasure of shoppers during the upcoming months. "We hope that local residents take advantage of our new farmers market," adds Ashley Williams Dufresne "It's a great way to showcase fresh produce and home-made products from Windsor and our surrounding towns."

Admission to the farmers market is free. Free parking is available on the street and in adjacent parking lots.

The mission of First Town Downtown is to position and promote Windsor Center as a premier New England town center that protects and utilizes its proud heritage as the basis for developing vibrant recreational, economic and cultural activity well into the 21st century.
