The Windsor Art Center announces the opening on September 1, 2018, of Local Color: Inspired by Science, an exhibition of art quilts created by Connecticut members of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA). An international organization, SAQA supports professional and avocational fiber artists and teachers. The artists of Local Color – some of whom come from science or technology backgrounds – explore the nexus between art and science both within their subjects and through their processes of creating these quilts. Demonstrating their perspective that art and science are not opposing disciplines, the artists have made works of art using traditional quilting techniques as well as photographic processes, illustration, and digital technology. The exhibition runs through Saturday, October 13, 2018. Special events during the exhibition at the Windsor Art Center: Saturday, September 1, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.: Opening reception. Free. Saturday, September 8, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.: Serial Surface Design Paint Play with Cathey LaBonte. Come play with paint and learn some surface design techniques. Participants will work in a series, starting with mark making on a monoprint background, then layer on color with a custom designed and carved stamp. You will take home your stamp and a unique set of cards. Please bring an apron or wear clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on. Workshop Fee: $250. Additional $25 Kit Fee includes Carving Tools, Carving Block, Acrylic Paint use, Design/Practice Paper, pencil and Blank Card Set. Maximum participants: 15. Free Film Friday, September 21, 7:00 p.m.: Enjoy popcorn and pizza while watching a film about a young woman coping with a failed relationship. She seeks the comfort of her grandmother and great aunt, who are part of a group of women quilters. Their stories of love, and life experiences steeped in wisdom, are shared while constructing a quilt. Staring Winona Ryder, Anne Bancroft, Maya Angelou, Alfre Woodard. This exhibition is made possible by a grant from The Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation; additional support is from the Greater Hartford Arts Council’s United Arts Campaign; the Department of Economic and Community Development, Connecticut Office of the Arts, which also receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; and by other individuals, businesses, & organizations in our community.
