Oliver Ellsworth was born in Windsor in 1745 and was one of five men appointed by George Washington to frame the Constitution of the United States of America. In 1772, he married Abigail Wolcott and they had nine children. In 1796, he was appointed third Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He is known throughout the country and the world as a Revolutionary Patriot, Attorney, Senator and Chief Justice. He is also widely recognized for having first coined the phrase 'United States of America". George Washington visited his Homestead in 1789.
