Join The Windsor Library Association
Do you visit the Windsor Public Library? If you live or work in Windsor, or if you simply love the library, you are invited to consider joining the Windsor Library Association (WLA).

What is the WLA?
In some respects, the WLA is like a friends’ group with a few differences. The formation of the WLA began when a group of citizens met in 1888 to create a library. Its humble origins began with a subscription list of over 120 people, each of whom donated a minimum of one dollar. With $210 dollars in its treasury and 597 books in 1889, the WLA was off to a good start. In the early 1900s the WLA purchased the Mather House in the center of town, which is the Main branch. In 1965 the L.P. Wilson Memorial Library construction was completed. It was made possible by a gift to the WLA by Leland P. Wilson, an active and generous citizen of Windsor, who left a portion of his estate specifically to build a library in the southern section of town. The WLA gave the Main branch to the town in 1974 but still owns the Wilson branch building. The town operates both libraries.

While the town pays for operating expenses of the library, there are many items and programs that the town cannot fund. That’s where the WLA comes in. The WLA raises funds for programs that the library staff recommends for children, teens, and adults. The WLA also makes it possible for library staff to purchase museum admission passes, the latest technology for e-books and audio books, computers, makerspace equipment, an artist-in-residence program, and the list goes on. The WLA is proud to support the library and its vital role in the community.

What Are the Qualifications for Joining?
The key qualification is a desire to contribute to the community. Windsor may be your place of residence, your place of work, or simply the location of your favorite library. WLA is an all-volunteer group so we draw on the skills within our membership for help where it is needed. Interests or skills in technology, art, marketing, and finance are always welcome but certainly not required.

What is the Time Commitment?
The WLA general membership meets twice a year, once in the winter and once in late spring. The Executive Committee meets more frequently to conduct business and other committees meet as needed to conduct their work.

Is There a Cost for Joining?
Members typically make a donation once per year but the amount is up to each individual. A fun fact: The $1 donated by members in 1888 is equivalent to $29 in 2022.
