The seminar, part of the Office of Program Policy's Employer Education Seminar series, offers a continental breakfast along with a wealth of information to help employers better understand the difference and similarities between the federal and state FMLA laws. "We invite area employers to come by for breakfast and some valuable information about Connecticut's Family and Medical Leave Act," explains State Labor Commissioner Sharon M. Palmer. "This seminar will detail the differences between Connecticut's FMLA law, which has covered employees in this state since 1989, and federal FMLA law, which was enacted in 1993 and amended in 2009." The seminar is geared toward human resource professionals, business owners and managers, attorneys and other employers with 50 or more employees. Conducted by Labor Department attorneys and subject experts Heidi Lane and Jennifer Devine, the event will include time for participant questions. "This seminar provides an opportunity for us to reach out to employers at a time and location that is convenient for them," Lane notes. "Employers often contact our office to clarify aspects of both the state and federal FMLA. Many times we are asked how much leave time can be given, whether the time away is paid or unpaid, and what constitutes a serious health condition. All of these issues will be addressed at this seminar." Individuals planning to attend can visit the agency's Web site at www.ct.gov/dol for an application that can be downloaded and sent to the Department of Labor. The $25 pre-registration fee is due by June 13, with checks made out to the Department of Labor. Applications and payment can be sent to Susan DeVito, Connecticut Department of Labor, Office of Program Policy, 200 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield, CT 06109.
