UPDATE: WINDSOR’S WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA PROGRAM
NO December 19 Ceremony due to COVID Safety Precautions

WINDSOR, CONN., December 9, 2020 – Carmon Community Funeral Homes of Windsor and Windsor’s American Legion Gray-Dickenson Post #59 are grateful to everyone who donated funds for wreaths that will be placed at the Windsor Veterans Memorial Cemetery on East St. in Windsor on National Wreaths Across America Day – December 19. Thanks to the generosity of the community, more than 600 fresh wreaths were purchased this year.

However, due to public safety concerns related to the Coronavirus:

· There will be NO formal wreath-laying Ceremony on December 19, as is true this year for other many other cities and towns in New England; and

· People who already purchased a wreath and want to place it themselves may come between
12 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. Masks will be required of all ages, and social distancing and safety protocol will be employed.

All of the remaining wreaths will be placed privately on graves in the veterans cemetery later that day.

“We are sorry that we cannot have our traditional ceremony this year but everyone’s safety is our main priority,” explains John C. Carmon, whose father, decorated World War II veteran Frank W. Carmon Jr., founded the funeral home in 1946. “Windsor’s annual Wreaths Across America ceremony program began 11 years ago and we look forward to 2021 when we all can gather again and hold a ceremony to salute our local veterans.”

Wreaths Across America, a national nonprofit organization, was founded in 2007 to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery that was started more than 20 years ago by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester. In 1992, Worcester and his company, Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Me., donated the first wreaths, numbering just 5,000, and all were placed at the national cemetery. The Wreaths Across America project has since expanded to include more than 1,000 local fundraising groups in all 50 states, representing more than 1,600 sites including cemeteries, military memorials, and other locations, along with the nation’s cemetery in Arlington, Va., and at national veterans’ cemeteries on foreign soil. In 2008, Congress issued a proclamation officially recognizing “Wreaths Across America Day” each December, this year on December 19th. The organization’s mission, Remember, Honor, Teach, is carried out in part by coordinating these numerous wreath-laying ceremonies, and is committed to teaching younger generations about the value of their freedoms and the importance of honoring those who sacrificed so much to protect those freedoms.
