Over the past several years, towns across Connecticut have seen a dramatic increase in thefts from motor vehicles occurring during the nighttime hours. Almost all of these thefts have been from unlocked cars. Along with these thefts, there has also been an increase in stolen cars that are directly related. Many vehicles that are stolen are also left unlocked during the night hours and either the keys or the fob remote are left in the vehicle. In addition, there has been an increase of vehicles being stolen from gas stations and take-out restaurants as victims leave the vehicle running or the keys in the vehicle as they enter a business for a short period of time.
The police department will continue to address this through proactive patrols and public awareness. We ask that our residents assist us by locking their vehicles and keeping their keys and valuable items in their home and if they see something, say something.
